Colposcopy (video colposcopy) is one of the most informative types of gynecological examination, allowing for a visual inspection of the cervix under multiple magnification. The use of video colposcopy has significantly improved early detection rates of cervical pathologies such as erosion, dysplasia, endometriosis, and cancer.

Video colposcopy is performed by a gynecologist during a patient’s initial consultation. First, the doctor examines the patient: the condition of the external genital organs, the vaginal mucosa, and performs a bimanual examination. Then, the doctor uses a video colposcope — an optical device with lighting that projects a clear, magnified image of the cervix onto a screen. The doctor and the patient can view the entire picture on the screen: changes in the mucosa, vascular pattern, and any abnormal growths.

For more detailed visualization, the method of extended video colposcopy is used. The cervix is treated with a special solution applied using a gauze swab. Within seconds, the solution reacts with components of healthy mucosal cells and temporarily stains them. Affected cells do not absorb the stain, allowing the doctor to immediately identify the pathological areas that may need to be sent for histological examination. Today, due to the availability of this procedure, doctors recommend it to every patient as a routine preventive measure. That’s why video colposcopy is included in the primary gynecological examination.

The special value of video colposcopy lies in the early detection of oncopathology — cervical cancer. During the procedure, the doctor can identify clear signs of cervical changes (such as the “cauliflower symptom”), which are an absolute indication for biopsy and histological analysis.

One of the most serious oncological challenges in the modern world is cervical cancer. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women die from malignant tumors. Vaccination with Gardasil can help prevent the development of this disease.

Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a group of widespread viruses of different strains that are transmitted sexually. Around 13 strains are currently known to lead to the development of malignant tumors. High-risk oncogenic types of HPV are responsible for the disease, with types 16 and 18 being the most dangerous. As with any illness, prevention is easier than treatment. This also applies to HPV-related diseases. An annual gynecological check-up is a must for cervical cancer prevention.

HPV vaccination is carried out using the modern vaccine Gardasil (manufactured in the Netherlands). The vaccine contains inactivated viruses. Vaccination against cervical cancer triggers the production of specific antibodies in a woman’s body that remain for several years.

Experts recommend starting vaccination against cervical cancer from the age of 9. The full course consists of 3 doses.
